Religious Education for Adults

Adult Religious Education takes many forms at St. John's. We have discussions, lectures, practice groups, book-based classes, adult forums, and even a film series! Most of our classes are either on Sundays or on Tuesday evenings. Some have childcare available for those who preregister. All of our classes are open to members, friends, and neighbors in the community. There is no charge to attend any of our classes, although some of the classes require books.

Classes are available during the year in the following five areas:

1, Unitarian Universalist History and Identity

II. Religion: Theology and Faith Development

III. Spiritual Practice

IV. Social Justice and Ethics

V. Community and Personal Growth

 Sunday Forums

Forums are held before the church service, 10  - 10:45 a.m. in Krolfifer Hall, across from the sanctuary. We try to present a variety of viewpoints on topics of interest to the St. John's community. It is in our sharing together that we clarify what we believe and help others to do likewise. All are welcome to attend.

Members and friends who would like to present a forum are asked to contact Carol Fencl or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

It is not necessary to register to attend any forum. Come to any that interest you.

Sunday, April 29 - Beltaine, the pagan path, and the Wheel of the Year

As the Wheel of the Year turns toward summer, Allison Sterrett-Krause, one of the leaders of St. John's UU Pagan group EarthSpirit, will lead a discussion about pagan spirituality and UUism. On the day that St. John's celebrates Beltaine with the May-Pole dance, learn more about the ways that pagans at St. John's view the world and the passing of time, and how pagans fit into the Unitarian Universalist church tradition.

Sunday, May 6 - “Religion and Politics with special attention to Rick Santorum and Roman Catholicism."

Discussion will be with Father Joseph Bracken, S.J., Professor Emeritus of Theology and Professor in the Brueggeman Center for dialogue at Xavier University. He will speak with us in his own name, not as a representative of the Catholic Church, the University or the Jesuit community at Xavier. We will explore important issues of religion and politics that arise in, but are not limited to, the current Presidential campaign season."

Sunday, May 13th - Mothering the World - Tough Love.

Since the early days of our nation’s history there have been women who spoke out and actively confronted the wrongs in society. And since 1922 when women finally won the right to vote in the U.S., politicians have known that they better pay attention to what women want. Whether they have born a child or not, women are the mothers of the world. Never underestimate them. Mother Love can be tough. Discussion facilitated by Ethel Ingalls

Sunday, May 20 -NO FORUM due to the Recognition breakfast for Religious Education Leaders

Sunday, May 27 Native Americans as Prisoners of War

What were the driving forces that led Native Americans to become prisoners in their own country?  What role did religion, politics, and just plain greed play?  How are those catalysts still affecting our country beyond the "Indian problem"?  Phil Henry will show a short DVD and lead the discussion.

Sunday June 3    Solitary Confinement - Torture in your backyard.
Torture is not just something that  happened at Abu Ghraib or in secret prison sites. It's happening in prisons on U.S. soil. We'll view a video produced by the National Religious Campaign Against Torture and begin to talk about this issue.
