St. John's Current Needs, February 2012
We are looking for people to help in these areas. If you can help in an area, please contact the coordinator (listed in parentheses):
- Adult RE. (Carol Fencl)
- Courses. All those wonderful Adult RE courses happen because of this group. Would you like to help in planning and expanding the offerings? Join this committee—meeting twice a year
- Bookstore. How about helping the St. John’s Bookstore? If interested, may be responsible for ordering books from UUA Bookstore and maintaining the inventory.
- Forum Team. Help plan our before church forums suggesting or co-leading topics for discussion.
- Caring Circle. We need volunteers who are willing to make a home, hospital or nursing home visit once a month to a member of the congregation, then report to the Caring Circle coordinators what is going on with the person they have seen. Orientation provided. (Nina Tolley)
- Communications Committee. Individuals interested in marketing St. John’s and/or individuals skilled in working with web pages. Specifically, we are looking for individuals who can: 1) Write the occasional news release (details and instruction provided); 2) Staff a booth at a summer festival in Cincinnati; 3) Fact-check and proofread an occasional document; or 4) Contribute design or layout talents to a project once or twice a year. - Denominational Affairs. This includes local, district and national levels of contact. (Frances May Brooks)
Several interested members could divide these responsibilities:
- UU Council of Cincinnati—Collaborate with representatives of all the local UU congregations on citywide projects
- Heartland District--Coordinate and work on the Heartland District's events and projects, including Chalice Lighters and District Conferences—Advertise and solicit members to attend.
- UU Service Committee liaison—Encourage membership in this organization; inform congregation and promote disaster response. (example: East African famine); plan (with the minister and RE Director) the kick-off for Guest at Your Table (Nov-Dec). See SACC below.
- UUA General Assembly—Assist with promoting attendance at GA and getting delegates from St. John’s
- Finance Council(Penny Shada)
- Money Counters. Perfect entry level commitment—30 minutes after service to count the offering, 1 to 3 Sundays/month scheduled according to your availability.
- Assistant Financial Secretary. Record Sunday morning income and make the bank deposit.
- Advisory Committee: work with the Director of Finance Council to oversee all financial activities and make recommendations to the Board of Trustees. Review financial reports monthly. Prepare short reports on a variety of financial topics to communicate with the congregation via the Reporter.
- Fund-Raising: Pick your level/type of involvement:
- 1. Lead the Taste of St. John's
- 2. Assist with the Taste of St. John’s
- 3. Identify and/or implement creative new ways to raise money
- Stewardship: Help create a healthy culture of giving: contribute your talents to plan approaches, prepare materials and/or talk with members and friends.
- Green Sanctuary Partners. Help St. John’s become more eco-friendly. Composting, recycling, community outreach, energy use reduction—there are many projects to choose from. (Mira Rodwan and Frances May Brooks)
- Grounds Committee. Needs chair who plans twice-yearly landscape events. Others who like one-time projects or occasional weeding, planting, trimming and watering are appreciated at all times. (Frank Meyer)
- Leadership Development Committee. Help members new and old see and develop their leadership potential; interview newcomers on their involvement interests; help match SJ needs with individuals’ gifts. (Debbie Combs)
- Membership Committee. (Jan Hay)
- Mentors for New Members. Need friendly people to contact a new member 1-2 times/month for 6 months, invite them to social/work activities in the church, and help them be connected.
- Membership Committee Members needed. Looking for energetic individuals to serve in a variety of ways: plan ways to nurture new members; participate in Pathway to Membership class offered 3-4 times a year; or serve on a sub-committee which has one specific task.
- Music(Cathy Roma or Rachel Kramer)
- Music Committee. Provide insight, direction, feedback and support to music program and music staff. Attend monthly meetings. Need not be a member of the choir.
- Music Librarian. Assist music staff with filing of music and music library database. Need not be a member of the choir, but knowledge of music is helpful. Knowledge of Microsoft Excel is helpful.
- Music Series Coordinators. Work with music staff to develop marketing and public relations plan for Music Series. Attend Music Series concerts as "House Staff" to unlock doors, sell tickets and usher. This could be job divided between a few or one person. This could be sign-up for each concert or work the entire Music Series.
- Office Tech Support Team. Needs team leader and members, particularly people with computer knowledge—hardware, software, networks, wireless, etc. Share your knowledge and experience in this vital piece of the St. John’s puzzle. (Tom Darner, Kathleen Smythe)
- RE Greeters to welcome visitor families on Sundays. Needs basic knowledge (or willingness to learn) of children’s RE program, ready smile, charming personality and availability 20 minutes before service. (Elizabeth Wilson)
- Service and Action Coordinating Committee(SACC)

- Drop Inn Center: Support for resuming St. John's in serving food to the homeless. Cook a meal and/or deliver to the Center. We would like to do this once a month; signing up does not obligate you to do this every month. (Barbara Hadden)
- Death Penalty Project Director or team members: Contact Howard Tolley for more information.
- Instructors for Adult RE classes and/or forum leaders for Sunday programs on Social Justice. (Carol Fencl)
- Worker Rights Advocacy: Phone and/or door-to-door canvassers for the November ballot to repeal SB5. (Howard Tolley)
- MARCC Representative to delegates council of Metropolitan Area Religious Coalition of Cincinnati quarterly meetings on immigration, hunger. (Howard Tolley)
- Safety and Security Task Force. This group is forming to consider how to keep the building and everyone in it safe. (Frank Meyer)
- Snow Shoveling Team—Arrive early for worship services or events to clear the sidewalks. Great exercise for adults and teens! (Pete Asman)
- Worship Arts Committee. Our main responsibility is to plan and coordinate lay-led worship services. We meet monthly and need members who are interested in creating inspiring, vibrant service experiences. No experience necessary. (Pamela Wilz)
