Rev. Dr. Frank Carpenter
Welcome From Our Minister
Welcome to St. John's! As you travel along your spiritual journey, I hope you will find our community a place of support and exploration. As we each search to set down roots in a compassionate place of belonging, we find enriching connections here. We hope you will want to find out more about us. We are made up of a wide variety of creative people. We sing and tell stories, listen to one another and seek ways to enrich our own personal lives and the world-wide quality of life. We like to talk, eat together and enjoy each other's company.
The English mathematician and philosopher Alfred North Whitehead, said Unitarianism is the religion most suited to the modern age. I believe that our relevance to the present age is based in our spiritual commitment to human rights. The Principles and Purposes of the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) begins with our reverence for human dignity. It then proceeds to outline some specific rights, such as the freedom to develop our own understanding of life and our role in it.
Our commitment to human rights has deep historical roots. We broke away from orthodox Christianity when William Ellery Channing sought to join human rights with traditional faith. Our Universalist roots with Hosea Ballou strongly stress the universality of our love and rights. Following in this spiritual path, we understand that maintaining healthy self-esteem is a first order priority.
I hope that you will find here at St. John's an hospitable place to further your spiritual journey. If chatting with me about anything might be helpful to you, please don't hesitate to contact me. My office phone is 513-961-1994.
Rev. Carpenter is a student of the life and work of William Ellery Channing (1780-1842). Read his recent biography of Channing.
